Wool Rugs - Why Buy One?
You have just installed all new hardwood flooring in your house. It looks beautiful! There are 5 layers of clear coat on it. I can tell by the shine!
But I hate to say it, but you’ll have to cover up a portion of those new
floors with a nice big wool rug!
Why do I need a wool rug, you ask?
First, they make your house feel warm and cozy. Hardwood floors are nice, but they are hard and cold. A nice wool rug takes that cold feeling and makes your floors feel homey and soft on your bare feet. And trust me - when you want to lie on the floor and watch TV , you won’t end up with a disjointed spine when you get up.
Secondly, they just look nice! They break up the monotony of solid floors and add a nice decorative touch to any room.
Many people go out and get what the supermarket calls a "wool rug" , which isn’t actually wool and isn’t technically a rug, then stick it on the floor. This is not a great move.
Why you need a pure wool rug? Why not any other kind of rug?
Wool has a natural ability to stay dry and clean. This means that you will have to spend less time cleaning your rug and more time enjoying it. Also, since they resist water, you don’t have to worry about any excess moisture ruing the material Wool rugs come in a variety of different shapes and sizes! Since wool is very easy to dye, the variety of patterns available dwarfs many other styles of rugs. This means that it will be a lot easier to find the perfect rug for your home.
Wool rugs are also fire resistant! The fibers are non-flammable, so in the
case of a fire, they are safer than any other kind of rug.
Ok, you sold me on wool rugs for my home, but just for curiosity’s sake, what are some of the other rugs I see made out of? First, there is nylon. Nylon is a synthetic material, meaning that it is not natural, and therefore, not as expensive as wool. It is not naturally stain resistant, but the finished rugs are usually treated with a stain protector. Since nylon is very durable, a nylon rug can last you over 10 years before you need replacing. Nylon is made form petroleum products, so if nylon is exposed to high temperatures, it will melt.
The other most common material for rugs are polyester. Polyester is not a natural product, but is very string and durable. Polyester rugs are moisture and stain resistant. Juts like nylon, polyester will melt if exposed to high heat.
So there you have it. Don’t buy a cheaper polyester or nylon rug to
cover your new hardwood floors, buy a nice pure wool rug instead! You
won’t be sorry!
